URAL 650 engines and other components are no longer supported from IWMA. So other solutions must come into play. Also, a kind reminder to those regarding available parts cheaply or from recyclers: dealers and most reputable independent service shops don’t use recycled parts primarily because of liability issues. We have no idea where a used part came from, how it was treated, or whether it was damaged. That used engine or gearbox you pick up from E-Bay may be a great deal, but you take on the risk for it if something goes wrong. As a shop owner I can’t afford to take on that risk.
The 650 URAL are attracting only a few folks – die-hard mechanics and new owners who like the looks of the sidecar and have no idea of what they are getting into. For instance, the URAL Deco looks so good and can be found relatively cheap so a few buy them. However, buyers be aware: Anyone with a 650 URAL are sitting on a time bomb – the hand-grenade alternator, the Russian bearings that break apart destroying all in the way, the metallurgy, the timing gears, bad crank bearings, faulty ignition systems. The list goes on. The record 650 breakdown at our shop had timing gears that completely broke apart after 350 km. If you buy a 650 be ready to spend $4,000-$6,000 on an upgrade to a new or rebuilt 750 engine and components with 2010 upgrades. Only then will you be assured of reasonable reliability.
